BMI calculator for women
Asian BMI cut-offs; body fat is estimated with the Deurenberg formula (±5%). Waist risk uses the South Asian women's cut-off of 80 cm (IDF). Not valid during pregnancy.
Is BMI different for women?
The BMI formula is the same for women and men: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². What differs is how to read it. At the same BMI, women naturally carry more body fat than men. South Asian women also tend to store more fat around the waist. That's why this page adds a body-fat estimate and a waist check, which say more about health risk for women than BMI alone.

Waist size: the number women should track
For South Asian women, a waist of 80 cm (31.5 inches) or more signals increased risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease (IDF criteria). Measure at the belly button after breathing out.
BMI at different life stages
| Stage | What to know |
|---|---|
| PCOS | Even a "normal" BMI can hide insulin resistance; waist and labs matter. See PCOS diet plan |
| Trying to conceive | A BMI between 18.5 and 22.9 supports ovulation; both low and high BMI can affect fertility |
| Pregnancy | BMI isn't used during pregnancy; weight gain is judged against your pre-pregnancy BMI. See pregnancy nutrition |
| After childbirth | Gradual loss of about 0.5 kg a week is safe while breastfeeding |
| Menopause | Fat shifts to the waist; strength training and protein help protect muscle and bone |
| Thyroid | Hypothyroidism can add weight; see thyroid diet |
Limits of BMI for women
BMI can't tell muscle from fat, and it isn't valid in pregnancy. It is less accurate for very muscular or older women. The body-fat figure here is an estimate (about ±5%); a clinic body-composition check is more precise.

What is a healthy BMI for a Pakistani woman?
For South Asian women, 18.5–22.9 is the healthy range. Overweight starts at 23 and obesity at 27.5. For a woman 5′3″ tall, that means roughly 47–59 kg.
Is BMI calculated differently for women?
No. The formula is the same, but women carry more body fat at the same BMI. That's why waist size (under 80 cm for South Asian women) and body-fat estimates are useful extras.
Can I use BMI during pregnancy?
No. During pregnancy, your doctor tracks weight gain against your pre-pregnancy BMI instead.
