Ramadan Diet Plan for Diabetics: Sehri and Iftar Guide

People with diabetes who are cleared to fast should eat a slow-release sehri as late as possible (protein, whole-grain roti, dahi), break the fast with water and 1–2 dates, and keep iftar fried food and sugary sharbat small. Check glucose during the day, and break the fast if sugar drops below 70 mg/dL or rises above 300 mg/dL.

Before Ramadan: get a risk check

See your doctor 4–6 weeks before Ramadan to assess your fasting risk and adjust medicine doses and timing. People with type 1 diabetes, recent severe hypos, pregnancy, kidney disease or poor control may be advised not to fast. Islamic rulings exempt those whose health would be harmed.

Sehri: make it last

Include Example
Slow carbs 1 chakki roti or oats
Protein Eggs, daal, chicken, dahi
Fibre Sabzi, salad
Fluids 2–3 glasses of water
Avoid Parathas fried in ghee, pheniyan with sugar, sweet chai

Iftar: break gently

  1. Water + 1–2 dates.
  2. Pray, then eat a balanced plate: chana chaat, fruit chaat without added sugar, then chicken or daal with salad and 1 roti.
  3. Keep fried items to 1–2 pieces, ideally air-fried pakoras.
  4. Skip sugary Rooh Afza and juices, or have a small diluted glass.

Between iftar and sehri

Drink water steadily (8 glasses in total), take a light walk after taraweeh, and avoid continuous snacking.

When to break the fast

Break your fast immediately if glucose is below 70 mg/dL or above 300 mg/dL, or if you feel shaky, confused or faint. This is a medical necessity.

Ramadan glucose check times

Test before sehri, mid-morning, mid-afternoon, before iftar and 2 hours after iftar, especially in the first week or after any medication change. Testing does not break the fast.

HbA1c to average blood sugar

Estimated average glucose (eAG) = 28.7 Γ— HbA1c βˆ’ 46.7 (ADAG study). Discuss your targets with your doctor.
